secrets of their forging with hero rings

As a fallen wizard can I play secrets secrets of their forging for playing a hero ring? In the text says you play the card on the sage not on the ring so i suppose it's possible. But I'm not sure.

Sage only. Playable on a sage during the site phase at a site where information is playable if a character in his company has a gold ring item. Tap the sage and the site. You may replace the gold ring with a special item ring from your hand (except for The One Ring) for which the gold ring could be normally be tested. Discard the gold ring item.

Ring is target of last action. Therefore even as Fallen-wizard you cannot play Secrets of Their Forging with hero ring.
