Great to see that illustration in a higher resolution, making it more impressive than on the card. Did you find that on Ted's website?

I bought it from Ted recently (https://www.tednasmith.com/shop/). Contact him directly (not his seller) for his old art. He had to dig and dig through his old archives. He still has most of his ICE artwork on slides I believe. I posted a link to his talk at Tolkien 2019 (it's on youtube). He discusses his old ICE work and some new/re-done art, which is much better. The issue with the slides of his ICE work is that many are "low quality" and not suitable for prints (mentioned to me and in the video). Master of Wood, Water, or Hill was a small original and with the slide he had the print is also small. No problem for me, I just like that old Bombadil escapes the Woods, leaps the Water, and is headed for the Hills. I used a frame with an 8"x10" matte but the print is about 10"x13", so larger than the card image. The framing stores here will be closed for months.

Yes, Ted also does prints from at least some of his ME illustrations (bought 4 prints from him a few years ago), but quality is, as you say, not really high.

Thanks for sharing. For me, he is one of the top 3 best artists of Tolkien's works.

Now I notice that this is the Witch-king. But even more surprising: "In Darkness Bind Them, the Witch King leads an attack on Minas Ithil."


Another surprise is Legendary Hoard. I always wondered if this was a dwarf of Thorin's company, but then the ominous man in the background didn't make sense. But now I see: "Legendary Hoard, Mîm the Petty-dwarf relishing his last moments before Turin finds and slays him."

Now I finally realize the rider in the centre is the Witch-king Where there is no face to be seen (only the red eyes) the mind constructs it nevertheless.
I had been unsure so far if the figure was someone wearing a mask or veil hiding the face. Because of the shiny walls and the mountains surrounding it, I've been supposing the city depicted was Minas Ithil. Yet, instead of the Ringwraith I ventured the rider in the middle could be King Eärnur. Last King of Gondor who went to Minas Morgul alone to battle the Witch-king in single combat - and who never returned. The scene would have shown Eärnur trapped by a group of enemies.

Thanks for the call out because it made me double check. You know, I didn't recognize Legendary Hoard for what it was intended to be because I didn't remember it from the story. And now that I go back and read Ruin of Doriath, I realize that the illustration and the description doesn't match at all. Mim with with Turin before all this, it was Hurin who got revenge at Nargothrond. But even then, it's not like he happened upon Mim digging through the treasure. Still, I can forgive Donato.

As for In Darkness Bind them, looking at the card again, I always assumed the crown was a feature of the fortress.
