Environment. At the start of its site phase, each company at a site in a Dark-domain [d], (or Shadow-land [s] if Doors of Night is in play) must tap one untapped character if available. Discard when any play deck is exhausted. Cannot be duplicated.
bolds are mine

What does this or if DoN are in play mean? I always thought it is to be read as additionally. Yesterday my opponent pointed out that he thinks it is meant in the way of instead.

Affected is each company at:
a)at site in [-me_dd-]
or
b) site in [-me_sl-] if Dooors of Night is in play.

None of companies cannot be simultaneously at a) and at b).
We will not speak of such things even in the morning of the Shire.

It means additionally. Considering Doors in play it would read like this, "At the start of its site phase, each company at a site in a dark-domain or shadowland...."

If it meant instead the card would probably read "alternatively"
