The card does not limit the target of it 1st effect to "an attack by Wolves, Spiders, Animals, or Undead against a ranger's company."
A ranger is a condition of the card, but not target, nor even an entity enacting 1st effect.
Therefore any ranger present in play may fulfill the conditions of the 1st effect of the card.

I propose the following erratum:

"Ranger only. Cancel an attack by Wolves, Spiders, Animals, or Undead against a ranger's company. Alternatively, if Gates of Morning is in play, decrease the hazard limit against the ranger's company by one (no minimum). He was taking a wandering course with many turns and doublings, to put off any pursuit.-LotRI"
We will not speak of such things even in the morning of the Shire.

I always interpreted the card that way.

The CRF on "Attack" states: "In order to cancel an attack or to directly affect an attack, the character doing so must be in the company facing the attack. Note that the region/site type a hazard creature was keyed to can be affected otherwise." The ranger actually IS the target of Many Turns and Doublings by virtue of "Ranger only."

In the older METW and METD cards like "Many Turns and Doublings", the "Skill only" statement in bold italics means "Playable on a <skill> only." You can tell because of how the cards were updated in MELE and especially in the some of the Challenge Deck cards.

By virtue of belief that skill cards target an entity with given skill.
Not universal belief.

It's not my belief. The play of "Skill only" or "Name only" or "Wizard only" cards only target the skilled/named/wizard character when the "only" phrase is in bold italics as in METW and METD. You can tell because the wording of many cards could not be understood UNLESS the "Skill only" was understood to target the character.

Later on, in MEDM and then especially in MELE, the phrase "Skill only" switched to italics (instead of bold italics) and it was then used as a keyword only, not a targeting playability condition. You can tell because these MELE cards will have playability conditions in addition to the "skill only" statement.
