Taps an (untapped) orc, troll or man character (or any untapped character if DoN), no?

The "any one character" is probably used to highlight the contrast against the non-DoN restriction of Orc, Troll, or Man character.

Some hazards have one effect up front and then an alternative effect if Doors of Night is in play (Awaken the Earth's Fire, Choking Shadows, Drowning Seas, Eye of Sauron, Gloom, New Moon, From the Pits of Angband, etc)

Some hazards have one effect up front and then an additional effect if Doors of Night is in play (Fell Winter, Foul Fumes, Long Winter, Night, Plague of Wights, Shadow of Mordor, Sleepless Malice, Worm's Stench, etc.)

Some hazards use parentheses to indicate differences when Doors of Night is in play (Dragon's Desolation, Minions Stir, Wake of War, Stormcrow, An Unexpected Outpost, Doubled Vigilance, Drums, No Way Forward, Chill Them with Fear, Stench of Mordor, Tidings of Doubt and Danger, etc.)

Waiting Shadow doesn't doesn't use any of these conventions. Normally I would expect all effects to be declared unless the card used "alternatively." But it seems that's not so.

Thanks for your input guys. I checked the Players Guide and it seems consistent.

It is playable on company (not on character), and character to be tapped is chosen as part of main effect (by defender).
We will not speak of such things even in the morning of the Shire.

The card has unusual playability conditions, that can change between declaration and resolution (depending on presence of Doors of Night in play).

That was only a first impression.

The playability conditions may be expressed as:

Target company with untapped character and Doors of Night is in play OR target company with untapped Orc, Troll, or Man character.

and they do not look then as unusual.

Right.

Still, the bold "and" is confusing, especially given the lack of the word "instead" at the end of the sentence.

I would have expected to see the Doors of Night boost in parenthesis. But maybe "(defender's choice)" removed that option.

Thanks for your input guys.

Does the defender choose which character, or whether the character to be targeted is an Orc, Troll, or Man? ;)

A terribly ambiguous card.

Environment. Playable on a company with an untapped Orc, Troll, or Man character. Tap an Orc, Troll, or Man character in that company (defender's choice). If Doors of Night is in play, the company need not contain an Orc, Troll, or Man and any one character in that company is tapped (defender's choice).
Someone would protest against errata:

"Environment. Playable on a company with an untapped Orc, Troll, or Man character. Tap an Orc, Troll, or Man character in that company (defender's choice). If Doors of Night is in play, the company need not contain an Orc, Troll, or Man and any one character in that company (defender's choice) is tapped."
